Do You Need to Remove Old Flooring First?

Whether old carpet or laminate must come up before new flooring is fitted, what subfloor preparation involves, and who disposes of the old floor.

In almost all cases yes, the old flooring needs to come up before new flooring goes down. Carpet and underlay must always be removed, because new carpet laid over old underlay will not perform and the grippers need to be checked. Laminate must be lifted rather than covered, because stacking one floating floor on another raises the floor height and creates an unstable base.

The exception is some thin, well bonded sheet vinyl, which can occasionally be left in place as a base if it is sound and flat. That is a judgement to make on site, not in advance.

Why Covering Over Causes Problems

Three things go wrong when old flooring is left down.

Floor height rises. Every additional layer lifts the finished floor, and doors that used to clear the carpet start catching on it. Internal doors can be eased, but it is extra work that nobody priced for.

The base becomes unreliable. A floating laminate floor is designed to move slightly with temperature and humidity. Laying a second floating floor on top of something that is itself moving gives you a surface that creaks, flexes and separates at the joints.

Problems stay hidden. Lifting the old floor is the only opportunity to see what is underneath it. Damp, a loose or rotten board, a failed patch of screed: all of it is visible for about an hour during a fitting, and invisible for the next fifteen years. Covering over means a known problem becomes an unknown one.

What Subfloor Preparation Involves

Once the old floor is up, the base is assessed and prepared. What that means depends on what is found.

On a timber floor, loose boards are secured, protruding nails or screws are dealt with, and any boards that have failed are replaced. Where the boards are uneven, overboarding with a sheet material gives laminate or vinyl the flat base it needs.

On a concrete or screed floor, high spots are ground back and hollows filled, usually with a levelling compound. Where the surface is dusty it is sealed so that adhesive will hold.

This is the stage that decides whether a floor lasts. Laminate laid over hollows will rock, creak and open at the joints within months, and vinyl laid over an uneven base will show every imperfection through the surface. In older properties across Mansfield, Alfreton and Ripley, where floors have been settling for a century, preparation is routinely part of the job rather than an exception.

We assess the subfloor at the quote and price any preparation openly, so it appears on the quotation rather than being discovered on fitting day.

Who Takes the Old Flooring Away?

We do. Uplift and disposal of your existing flooring is included as part of the job, so there is nothing left in the garden and no need to ring round for a skip.

It is worth checking this with any quote you receive, because it is not universal. Some fitted prices leave uplift and disposal with the customer, and a van load of old carpet and underlay is more awkward to get rid of than people anticipate.

What You Can Do Beforehand

Clearing the room helps and saves time. Furniture moved out where possible, small items and anything breakable taken elsewhere, and curtains lifted clear of the floor. Tell us in advance if anything is too heavy to move and we will plan around it.
